9/11/2019· Below is an extract from the PM-30V manual which is a similar mill to the WM18. Basically it's telling you to move the column to tram the Y-axis - now instead of shimming the column I jacked it - same result as shimming I think. But still the quill out of alignment will not be resolved by the procedure in the manual as you clearly explained Nigel.

I've been in tooling for close to 20 years, used the nod maybe 5 times total. The only way to set the angle on a head accurately is with a sine plate, but if you have a sine plate you don't need to angle the head.To me its a feature that causes more problems than solutions it creates, 99% of the time I'm tramming to check to see if it has slipped out of vertical.

After you get it close, don't try to split the difference in half, just bump it a few tenths and then check the other side. This is especially true in the "nod" direction along the Y axis, because the pivot is not in the center of the circle you are measuring, which makes the response non linear.
