Native Greenlandic Inuit were already familiar with ruby, but tugtupite, another red gemstone, was discovered in 1957 at Tugtup Agtakôrfia on the north coast of Tunugdliarfik Fjord, South Greenland. Limited quantities of this rare gem make tugtupite a collector's item.

Nevertheless, True North Gems Greenland (TNGG) went bankrupt last fall. Only ten days later, Leonhard Nilsen & Sønner Greenland AS (LNSG), a subsidiary of LNS, bought the bankrupt estate.
5/26/2017· The area originally was being mined by True North Gems, but the company entered into voluntary bankruptcy in September. The mining license for the Aappaluttoq Ruby Mine then was awarded to LNS Greenland, an investor in the project, after it made a bid.
True North is well-placed to become its coloured gem counterpart. According to the company's Greenland Ruby Project Fact Sheet, 2006 saw a Christie's St. Moritz auction set a new per carat record for ruby. An 8.62 carat ruby sold for $3.6 million US, or 425,000US per carat.

Under the terms of the mining license, True North has agreed to pay a gross revenue royalty to the government of Greenland of 5.5 percent on all sales of rubies and pink sapphires exploited from the deposit.
