Killey had a placer claim on Palmer Creek, a tributary of Resurrection Creek, near Hope, in 1895. Resurrection Creek is the site of the exciting second discovery of gold on the Kenai Peninsula in 1888. Since 1895 this creek has yielded an approximated 30,000-40,000 ounces of gold. Gold mining in Alaska, a state of the United States, has been a major industry and impetus for exploration and settlement since a few years after the United States acquired the territory from Russia. Russian explorers discovered placer gold in the Kenai River in 1848, but no gold was produced. Gold mining started in 1870 from placers southeast of Juneau, Alaska.
On the Peninsula, several businesses linked to oil and gas have the highest assessed value of any properties in the borough, which is a direct benefit to the community through property tax revenue.
